The Seventh Master – 32

Jerun looked at Val. The boy didn’t say anything, outloud, or with his mind. Jerun sighed.
:Relax,: Val said softly. :I was heading towards their city anyway. Now will get in all that much easier.:
:But with no money.: Jerun observed. :Why didn’t you tell me they were there sooner? I could have done something.:
:No you couldn’t have.:
Jerun thought for a moment as the dwarves herded them along slowly.
:You could have, though.: Jerun said.
Val winced.
:Just… trust me, Jerun. They need me at their home. They just don’t know it yet. I have to stop what is coming.:
:What’s coming?:
Val jolted against a dwarf.
“Watch it kid.” The stocky warrior growled.
“Sorry,” Val murmured, looking so much like some scared kid.
:You don’t really want to know, Jerun.: Val said gently. :Trust me on that, too.:
Jerun growled.
Geofren looked over his shoulder.
“What is your problem, knighty?” He inquired.
Jerun blinked and didn’t reply. The dwarf snorted, and kept going.
Val looked at Kasheyra.
:Don’t worry. They won’t do anything to you. You’re human.:
She looked up at him, her face expressionless.
:How… encouraging.: Her mind’s voice was quiet.
Val smiled at her.
:You just mindspoke.:
Kasheyra visibly swallowed. He chuckled.
“What’s so funny, kid?” The dwarf he had bumped into growled.
“Nothing that you would find in humorous in the slightest, I’m sure.” Val said quietly, a small smile on his face.
The dwarf snorted, but wasn’t really interested in finding out what had made Val laugh. Val’s foot came down and he reached out with his mind. When he sensed what was just around the rocky bend ahead his breath sucked in. He followed the dwarves, and Jerun in front of him, around the curve.
He heard Kasheyra’s breath be sucked in as the entrance to the tunnel that led to the dwarf city came into sight.

  1. The tunnel came into sight! But was that what they were gasping about?

I’m rather liking these dwarves. They’re funny. 🙂
