The Hobbit

The Hobbit is published.
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.”
In the early 1930’s, J.R.R. Tolkien found a blank page on one of his students’ school papers he was correcting and wrote this first line…

The Hobbit - There and Back Again

The Hobbit.

This work by J.R.R. Tolkien, along with the Lord of the Rings has, I believe, has had more impact on me than any other fiction ever written, alongside, perhaps, the Chronicles of Narnia.

The Heroic quest and tale of adventure came to life for me. High Fantasy became my ‘niche.’ And I’d forever be a Tolkien fanboy.

I’ll never forget the first time I read the Hobbit. I was sitting in the backyard of my best friend’s house. He owned The Hobbit and The Return of the King. I owned The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. So I brought over The Fellowship, and he gave me The Hobbit, and we went out into the yard to read some.

I was laughing in moments. And swept away, never to return, a moment later.

What will never cease to amaze me about The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings is how clean they feel. How complete. How when you finish reading them, you have this sense of certainty, and a feeling of satisfaction.

Today is the 75th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit. It changed my life, in many ways. Did it change yours?
