Trance

okay.. so I got this random picture in my head earlier today of this dungeon cell filled with people.. among them a young boy, and a younger girl… and this is what happened.

Trance leaned against the dungeon wall and closed his eyes. Three months, five days. He thought. He wasn’t sure how long it had been anymore. It could be six months for all he actually knew.
The door creaked open and one of the jailers stepped in. The room full of prisoners tensed. Who would they take today?
The jailer looked around, and as his eyes fell on a small quivering finger he grinned. “You. Girl. Come.” He beckoned to the little girl.
Her eyes grew large and she started to whimper. “No, please. No… don’t hurt me.”
The jailer just smiled his evil smile and stepped forward.
Trance looked at the little girl. She reminded him of his baby sister. He rocked forward onto his feet and pushed off from the wall. He stepped between the two.
“Don’t take her.”
The jailer’s eyes narrowed.
“Get out of the way.”
The other prisoners tried to melt into the walls. This wasn’t going to end well.
“You can’t have her.”
The girl stepped behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist and leaning into him for protection.
He glanced down at her. As if he could protect her. He was only fifteen himself.
“Take me instead.”
The jailer stared at him. Then shrugged. “No one has ever done that before. Interesting, I suppose.” He gave a gruff shout and two guards entered the cell. “Take these two up.” He pointed at Trance and the girl.
Trance stiffened. The girl whimpered.
He placed his arm around her and squeezed as the guards herded them out. “It’ll be all right. Don’t be afraid.”
Her soft eyes looked at him, a small spark of hope beginning to burn in them. He prayed he hadn’t just lied to her.
